Any time you are building a structure, it is important to know and understand your local regulations and permitting requirements. One part of these requirements deals with the erosion and sedimentation of your property and the areas surrounding it. If you are building something that will disturb the land, you will need to submit an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan (ESCP).

So what is an ESCP? Put simply, it is a document that explains what steps you are taking to reduce the impact your project will have on the land. The ESCP will cover the ways that you will prevent or reduce erosion during construction, and how you will ensure that you are not harming the environment.

You will need to have an Erosion and Sediment Control Plan when you are doing work such as pouring a foundation, building a retaining wall, installing driveways or sidewalks, grading the land, or installing utilities, just to name a few.

ESCPs are important for the health and safety of the community. When land is disturbed, there is risk that debris and waste will end up in nearby water sources. Protecting our environment and water supply is all of our responsibility, and it is up to the owner to have a plan in place to do so whenever construction is taking place.
